Monsal Head – Wyedale – Deep Dale Circular
We completed this Peak District circular on 22 February, and it turned into a really memorable day, not just for the route, but for the people. It was our biggest turnout to date, with lots of new faces joining the group, which created a great atmosphere from the very start.
Setting off from Monsal Head, the opening views across Monsal Dale set the scene before the route dropped into quieter valleys. The walk through Wyedale was calm and unhurried, giving plenty of opportunity to chat and settle into a steady, sociable pace.
As we moved into Deep Dale Nature Reserve, the landscape became more enclosed and dramatic, with limestone sides rising above us. Underfoot conditions were typically wintry – muddy in places with some slippery limestone – but nothing unexpected, and the group handled it well.
The woodland sections through Shacklow Wood added shelter and contrast before the route looped back towards Monsal Head. The rolling terrain and gradual climbs made this a solid but accessible moderate hike, well suited to a mixed group.
Overall, this was a brilliant winter walk and a real milestone for Summits Up. Seeing so many people especially those joining us for the first time – moving together, supporting one another, and enjoying the hills made the day just as rewarding as the route itself.
