Public speaking is a fear most people share, even when it is only small groups of colleagues in a work environment, you can shake with anxiety. Now amplify that to performing in front of 150 paying guests, a spotlight fixed on you and you must make them laugh for five whole minutes with nothing but your own creativity and a mic. Terrifying.
But, that’s exactly what 10 brave people did for the very first time on the evening of 24th July, raising over £2000 for Summits Up. With only 6 weeks of training & advice from comedians Russ Lee & April Thompson each of our volunteers were able to delve into life experiences to craft and perform a unique 5 minute set. And boy did they deliver. The crowd was packed, engaged, supportive, and every performer was met with genuine laughter and applause, all held together by Russ, MC’ing like a seasoned pro.
It wasn’t easy and the nerves were real, but it was a brilliant and fun night for all involved and its impact will be felt far beyond those in the room that night. Laughter really is the best medicine.
